The fact that only Ireland is willing to hold a referendum on this matter symbolically addresses what is wrong with the treaty -- in effect, it shifts decision-making power from elected officials to faceless bureaucrats.
Maxim is right about this one, much like a broken clock which gives the correct time twice a day.

I like the comparison about being right twice a day. But more than that, thank you very much for the credit due on this subject. I appreciate your ability to see this as a worrying trend, as no doubt it will increasingly become in the coming months and years ahead. There are plenty of other people who are concerned, particularyl conservatives in Estonia headed by brainchild Martin Helme. He hopes to take this decision to the European Court. However, as you no doubt are aware, there are too many people who don't see anything wrong with the Lissabon ratification, and hate anyone that opposes it, starting and ending with me. So much the harder it is to see the wood from the trees, but at least this argument is fairly clearly cut down the middle, and Olev Vallimaa together with Henn Põlluaas are doing their damn best to make sure somehow we can claw back a little bit of the original Estonian Constitution, if there is any possibility of that at such a late hour. Rait Maruste of the European Court says that it is all too late, and that it seems we will have to live with the decisions that will from this point on be made for us somewhere far away from Estonia. But in the end it is the decision of the Estonian people, and at least we can lay claim to not being the most intelligent race of people on earth. This decision proves it beyond any previous doubt whatsoever.
Even a blind squirrel can find a nut now and again.
Long live the Republic of Ireland !!!
