The Toronto Estonian organizations are definitely our favorite in all of North America. We like the close affiliations with prestigious academic centers like the University of Toronto too. One small wish for the Toronto center: Is there any way to provide youth hostel-style accommodations for visiting Estonians when they visit Toronto and need to stay overnight? Sometimes it is just not possible to attend an evening event and drive back home long distance the same evening. We would prefer that the money for overnight accommodation go to the Estonian Center instead of a hotel chain not affiliated with them.

Since North America is basically known as a “language graveyard” [ref.2] with “Only English by third generation” **[ref.1], future Toronto Estonian house programs should collaborate heavily with the University of Toronto (and others) to offer high level Estonian language studies suitable for those students seeking translator job opportunities. Various government agencies elsewhere have already started to realize the need for a new generation of language specialists, and having an “Only English” third generation is not showing sufficient foresight.
