How does Estonian Foundation of Canada distribute money? This has always puzzled me. When I donate money to Toronto Estonian School through EFC does Estonian School automatically get the money or do they have to request it, explaining why they need it? Does EFC then decide if and what amount they receive? If you don't designate your money to a specific organization what happens to it? Who were the 19 funding applications and how much did they each receive?
The Foundations financials are of public record.
And if the goings on of the organization are of interest to you, perhaps you should attend the AGM and present your questions to them.
After all, perhaps these questions need to be asked.

Detailed financial records are not on public record. Members of ESK have several times asked for break-down in funding during AGM, but juhatus has specifically refused to elaborate. They don't want public to know how much Seedrioru gets, Joekaaru, koorid, kool, etc. They only publish overall numbers.
If the Foundation doesn't disclose the distribution of donations, then we should make donations directly to the end-user.
I've earmarked my contribution and I assume that my wishes are respected. Nonetheless, I'd like to know what others are supporting.

Dont we all know ESK pays a lot of money to Eesti Maja for the rent that choirs and schools etc. would otherwise have to pay through fees? That's been widely reported. Didn't they also say they paid per child support for the camps and schools? It's really not too hard to piece together where most of the money goes. Plus they can't do anything with the money that their CRA objects don't specify.
I used to work for an environmental foundation, and the CRA regulations for foundation grants are pretty strict in terms of the documentation they require from a recipient before releasing any money. This is probably one of the safest, most scrutinized places to give your money - if you want to keep it in the esto community in Canada.

I'm not convinced that ski weekends, golf and hockey tournaments call for our support. Among the participants are plenty of non-Estonians and young people with Estonian roots who don't speak the language and show no interest in it. Sports are fun. They could and should be self-funding.
The Foundation should support students who participate in genuinely Estonian activities. Nor should it overlook the older generation. Ehatare is full of lonely widows who need to have their days brightened.

Wow, the culture vulture crowd is out in full force!
Why shouldn't the Foundation support these various activities?
Of course sports are fun, that's how you bring in young & old, regardless of language ability. Bring them in closer and they can be attracted to other activities & events.
Is support going to be based on language ability? I guess we can write off the choirs then.
Any activity that brings people closer to the Esto community is worthy of support.

....songs in Estonian.
There's no such thing as an Estonian golf club or hockey stick.
I'd rather direct my charity dollar to a student, of any ethnic backround, who wishes to spend a year at Tartu Ülikool.

Yeah, that's rich. Sing in Estonian and give instructions in English.
And you'll notice that the Foundation's support is to the "whole Estonian community" in Canada.
How funding a Bulgarian student to study in Tartu benefits our community efforts in Canada is beyond me.

There are many sports enthusiasts in the community. Are they not allowed to direct payments through ESK to sports clubs/events?
If a participant is to pay towards the cost of a sport event anyway- then why shouldn't they utilize ESK to get a tax receipt out of it?

I would be disappointed if they didn't support pretty much every event and person who applied ... we are so few and I'm happy that we get together at all. There is so much competition for our time these days, without our community cheaping-out on what we do.
...aga on neid kes teevad õõnestustööd meie kogukonnas.
Kunagi, nad proovisid Ehataret hävitada. Hetkel, nad ikka tahavad takistada eesti keskuse rajamist Tartu College'i taga.
Mis nendega teha?

Why are we not to allowed to articulate unpleasant truths?
Certainly, slander is unwelcome and for that, there are legal remedies.
By contrast, facts and opinions that conflict with those of Allan Meiusi should not be erased.
