Well duh!

Doesn’t any large scale project go under a series of reviews? Especially if there are delays? How effen misleading is this article?
Donor25 Dec 2021 10:13
It appears that this project is being grossly mismanaged. Is there a process in place to return donations, should this project fail to materialize? I donated to contribute to a new Estonian House for our community organizations, not the salaries of self-appointed directors and consultants who are very clearly failing.

Why are you assuming that the project is being mismanaged?
Identify yourself and step forth with some facts!

What’s holding up the permit to build?

In Estonia, they’ve asked and got answers. In August 2021 Postimees interviewed Ellen Valter, Chair of the Northern Birch Credit Union Ltd. Board of Directors and the Steering Committee of the International Estonian Centre:

“In the fall of 2020 Postimees wrote an overview of the building of the Estonian Centre in place of the old Estonian House. How’s the construction going?

The closing date for the sale of Toronto Estonian House was Sept. 1 of last year. The money is now in hand. We have a rental agreement with the buyer of the house, that we can use the house, as we have until now. We can get started on the construction [of the new building] soon, since we’re going to get all the requisite permits without delay. The new Estonian Centre building will be built in downtown Toronto over two subway tunnels. This means that there are very high safety requirements. The city councillors have said yes, but I can’t say exactly when the bucket will go into the ground.

With that, everything in the building of the new centre is proceeding according to plan?

Nothing is going according to plan! All the time there are complicated problems to solve, to keep the thing moving.

And things are moving?

Yes! The technical side is one part of the complexity. Such work hasn’t been done before. We’re trail blazers. It’s as if we’re constructing an airplane at the same time as the airplane is already attempting takeoff….”

https://www.postimees.ee/73144... (in translation)

June 2019: “On Madison Ave, the project is in the planning and design stage, with the critical TTC technical review expected to be finished by the end of the year. The closing of 11 Madison and the beginning of the construction is expected to follow shortly thereafter.”

https://www.eesti.ca/toronto-e...

By April 2021 the right people were hired for the "complex" construction project:

“‘I’m at the stage of my career that I enjoy complex* projects the most and KESKUS is just that,’ says Bill and notes that at H+C, he has built over subway tunnels before and has a solid working relationship with the Toronto Transit Commission who owns and manages Toronto’s transit services. . . Bill is H+C’s Project Manager for KESKUS and oversees the project team for estimating, site supervisors, health and safety, accounting, project managers, labour and administration.”

https://www.estoniancentre.ca/...

Update #120 Dec 23 2021: "2022 will see the completion of the full budget review given escalated costs, and the permitting process to get the project to groundbreaking."

Update #119: “The Baltimore community is dwindling, and the Estonian House was sold,“ [Ets] said. “It was heart-breaking, but we realize that the future for the Estonian community in North America is nevertheless strong, and a big part of that will be at KESKUS.” The Baltimore Estonian Society donated US$100,000 to KESKUS. Dec. 17 2021.

* Apropos of “complexity” in March 2021 the city called repairs to the nearby sinkhole at Beverley and College “complex,” adding that crews would need to remove the above ground TTC tracks and safely navigate a significant amount of underground infrastructure. The collapse of an underground sewer created a large sinkhole in the roadway and the underground repairs required a coordinated approach from the city, the TTC and other utility companies.

I can hardly believe that sane people have contributed to this KesKus parking lot joke. It's never going to rise up & I feel sorry for the duped contributors. TTC holds the rights underneath the property! This shows the danger of belonging to "ühingud, where talk is cheap".

I doubt that there's a Russian troll involved here.
There's no need to look that far since we have some energetic destructive busibodies among us, sitting on the sidelines, criticising every initiative and imputing sinister motivations to every selfless volunteer.
It's a problem, easily remedied, if EWR ceased printing anonymous innuendo.

Youre probably one of those people who thought a few piruka bake sales would raise enough money to cover all the repairs the old EH needed. Youre ignorance in matters of the real world is quite amusing, albeit sad. Take a look at those supporting KESKUS, and then take a look at the types undermining it. I think its quite evident where the sane poeple of our community landed (ill give you a hint..not in your group)
What about the children?28 Dec 2021 14:53
This project is undermining itself. There are far better ways for the Toronto Estonian community to spend $30-40 million, than open up a zoom center. However, there is advantage with the zoom center, in that parking becomes a non issue.

English Standard Version
Build Your House on the Rock
24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

Do you understand that there is a new science called Engineering? In case you weren't aware there is a department within the Toronto City government that must approve ALL plans BEFORE anything is built?

Hey NYer,
Would you say that the twin towers and building no.7 collapsed in 2001 due to poor engineering?

I guess you missed the point. Excellent engineering kept the Twin Towers up after the first attack.

Acts of war are rarely taken into planning new buildings... unless of course you are building in Tel Aviv of Tehran. Do you know something that the engineering profession doesn’t

NYer.....On July 28, 1945, a B-25 Mitchell bomber of the United States Army Air Forces crashed into the Empire State Building in New York City, while flying in thick fog. The accident caused the death of fourteen people (three crewmen and eleven people in the building) and damage estimated at US$1 million (equivalent to about $14 million in 2020), although the building's structural integrity was not compromised.[1] I guess engineering know how was better in 1945.

The 1940s was an accident...

The “blind iman” attack drove tons of explosives into the underground parking

9/11 was two fully fueled jets purposefully crashed into the twin towers.

If you see the 1940s accident equivalent to the Twin Tower attacks ... perhaps you should review the “engineering” of all three events

Actually three buildings went down on 9/11, but the media always talks about the twin towers. Seems like engineers also like to argue among themselves as to why Bldg 7 which was not hit by any planes went down. Bldg 7 a 47-floor structure went down at 5:20 pm hours after the morning plane attacks.
A group of engineers and architects is demanding the American National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) retract and correct a 2008 report that concluded one of three World Trade Center buildings collapsed because fire weakened the steel supporting it in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Maybe engineers aren't gods after all.

Don’t let these irrelevant rants get to you. ‘From the sidelines’ represents the very worst of our community here. A small, yet vocal minority focused on slander, conspiracy mongering, and destruction. Not a positive attribute among anyone in this group. The majority of us know who these people are, and hope they will actually follow through with their threats of leaving the esto community once Keskus is built. Fingers crossed it will be so.

Ahh, North Yorker, your faith in modern human engineering over Jesus' simple admonition about the wisdom of building a house on sand, it
gives us all hope for a future free of superstition, a future that can be bent to the true will of the people (who are, of course, usually too stupid to realize what it is)! Your anger at those who disagree with you, your impatience with their refusal to submit to your infallible logic, it is truly inspiring and gives us much to hope for, in the secret appendices to the upcoming budget review (do not use the word "forensic" here!) - Meanwhile, a gentle reminder that it is a brand new tax year and time to once again renew your commitment to the power of modern engineering and Canadian income tax accounting to triumph over common sense! Make your donation to the Estonian Arts Center today!

using the Tolstoy novel and movie that is based on it, for your pseudonym is somewhat interesting for your purpose of responding (at least to me).

"A talented inventor who created the machine of unprecedented destructive power, obsessed with world domination. In his manic quest, he commits one crime after another, without assuming the dreadful consequences would be for him."

Additionally, I am of the opinion that, you have confused/misused the true meaning of the quote from Matthew 7:24-27 & Luke 6:46–49.

Jesus said that whoever heard his words and obeyed Him, would be like a wise man who built on a rock. And that house could never be torn down. It could never be moved.

But if we only hear the wonderful words of Jesus and yet still go our own way and don't do what He says, then we are like a foolish person, who builds his house on the sand.

Just think about that, who would want to build a house on a sand-dune? It sounds very foolish, doesn't it?

Most understand that this was a parable, not an "admonition"

As for "Your anger at those who disagree with you, your impatience with their refusal to submit to your infallible logic," you just might be correct in your observation...

"to become angry with people you think are stupid" a modernized version of 2 Corinthians 11:33–12:9
