We have much to learn from these proud Estonians in Alberta. Though language is extremely important for maintaining a culture, we can see that from the large number in Barons, that Estonians can be Estonian without the language and they can be happy and active Estonians all the while! Hats off to you.

Interesting article but it did not mention if the Estonian language is still spoken in the area. I have spoken to a few people who have been to some of these areas in Alberta where Estonians settled in the days of Imperial Russia and some of these farmers whose ancestors moved there still speak Estonian at home.

What are "happy, active Estonians" without the language?

We are people who live like other Canadians with one distinction -- now and again we attend a ceremony to commemorate or celebrate our Estonian ancestors.
