0You need to do a lot more work at convincing your local members about the seriousness of the situation. It's obvious that they are influenced by the most outspoken lobby group, and certainly if that means the Russians, then get to work and scream louder than they do!! Don't be backward in coming forward, please.

0I suspect that Harper and P Van Loan aren't worried about losing any of the Estonian vote or $$. Otherwise they would have reacted to or would have AT LEAST acknowleged the crisis.

That said, it's nice to see that Estonia is overwhelmingly supported and that Russia is essentially alone, looking thuggish and untrustworthy -- not a good candidate for the WTO, the EU or anything else. Russia will be hurt by this affair, in the long run, much more than Estonia.

Nonetheless, such boycotts are notoriously ineffective because too many people, including Russians, have an incentive to violate them.
Petroleum is especially difficult to control. Once it's in the international market (Rotterdam), it's no longer Russian, Saudi or Iranian -- it's simply petroleum. And don't lose sight of the reality that Russia needs to export it. An economy mired in corruption and criminality can't produce much of anything. It can make money only by exporting something that is already there -- an unprocessed natural resource.

0The blockade of Estonian goods to Russia won't be that effective and will have negligible impact on the economy. Russian trade account for less than 10% of all cross boarder trade and about 1% of Estonian GDP. Most banks have revised their forecasts already and have chopped off only 0.1-0.2% growth due to the current crisis.
The main driver of the Estonian economy at this time is internal consumption and to be honest the economy could stand to cool off a little bit as it's been on the verge of overheating for awhile. Ironically the boycott of goods could actually help the Estonian economy with "soft landing".
