Inasmuch as Ilves wanted to impress the Russkies with his indelible bowtie and US- inspired think-tank policies about freedom for captive peoples, the fact is that Russia doesn't see it's subjects as fitting into that category since Russia became independent of the USSR. These days there are too many people around who want to shift all the remains of forgone Soviet policy onto independent Russia, without understanding that as far as Russia is concerned, she lives today by a different set of rules than she did before gaining Independence. No wonder Ilves' message went down like a lead balloon!

Ilves can be making a point, a clear point, that there is still animosity for the Soviet policies and then I start to agree that someone, needs to make a clear cut apology or maybe better, clear cut condemnation for the Stalin era. As of yet, the government of Russia has not done this.

If Russia is independent of the USSR and if it lives by a different set of rules, then where does it stand on the issue?

The notion of “people wanting to shift all the remains of forgone Soviet policy onto independent Russia” is yes, true…but ok if there is a level headedness behind it….and this issue sort of, in some ways, reminds me of Canada and the recent gesture made in parliament when the givernment of Canada publicly and sincerely apologyzing for the 1930’s policy of “aggressive assimilation” of the aboriginal peoples by forcing them to modernize in residential schooling, stripping them of their native culture and heritage.
