the design of the Madison site is very nice indeed
Yet, the former shop at the Estonian House was used to promote the Madison project to all in attendance.
I wonder if anyone really understood the relevance of your group touting the great design of the Madison project when really we (our community) could not host such an event at the new Estonian Centre on Madison.. the building is a fraction of the size of the Estonian house.
You could not possibly have such events at the new Madison site.
Really!
It was great to have so many Estonians filling the suur saal and purchasing food from Ulle in the basement.. tables of goods being sold.
No way we could all fit at the proposed Madison site
Sorry... that is the tragedy that this point is being overlooked.

To An Observer:
I. Tanner at no point writes that she is speaking on behalf of the community. She states that it is unfortunate that the group of people at the Christmas event (community) will not be able to fit into the new building in the present numbers.
You, on the other hand, presume to speak on behalf of the boat people, of whom my mother was one. I doubt that she, a person who lived frugally all her life, would support such extravagance (the Madison project) at a poorly chosen location and at the expense of breaking up the community.
If we revisit our history, the first plan for the Estonian House in the 1950s was another grand design – then on Merton. The location was also poorly chosen, since it was chosen in the “dry” area of the city. The regular folks in our community banded together and scraped together the money to build elsewhere, and chose the schoolhouse on Broadview, which has been a strong hub of our community. Why has it been a strong hub? Because the community came together to build it. You build a community from the ground up by the people, not have it ordained top down by elites. We can aspire to more, I agree, but we do not need to both bankrupt the community and tear it apart by choosing the Madison location. To have a common solution would mean including, not excluding and ignoring community members’ needs.

I find it incrediby presumptuous that Ingrid Tanner purports to speak on behalf of the community.
In our community we have many views. Often opposing. What we need is a compromise. There are few of us. Let's seek a common solution.
While I am incredibly fond of the Broadview location, to remain there is to be stuck in the past. When the pros and the cons of the two locations are weighed against each other (yes, there are both pros and cons to each), Madison wins.
On this December 23rd evening I spent time with a compatriot reminiscing about our parents, the boat people circa 1950. They would be proud to see us at a new facility. Broadview was what their means allowed. We can aspire to more. It is within our means.

more modern, more expensive, more traffic
however less children's space, less parking, less unity

It's incredibly sad, when intelligent people cannot appreciate what they have until it is gone.
