5th Baltic Film Festival in Canada

Providing a showcase for Baltic media production and a forum for the exchange of cultural and technical expertise among film and television producers on both sides of the Atlantic, the one-day festival celebrates contemporary film from Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia.

Saturday, December 3

4 pm: A Wolf-Teeth Necklace (Vilko dantu karoliai)
A feature film by Algimantas Puipa, Lithuania 1997, 97 min. In Lithuanian with English subtitles.
A relic given by his dead father allows an artist to reflect on his personal and family histories, which are fraught with struggle and scandal.
Winner, the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury of the Lübeck Nordic Film Days and the Grand Jury Prize of the Rouen Nordic Film Festival.

6 pm: Revolution of Pigs (Sigade revolutsioon)
A feature film by Jaak Kilmi & René Reinumägi, Estonia 2004, 100 min. In Estonian with English subtitles.
Young people gathered at an Estonian summer camp look forward to a summer of adventure, but find their youthful energy forced into the boundaries of a totalitarian system. Revolution is inevitable.
Winner, Grand Prix Asturias of the Gijón International Film Festival.

8 pm: Keep Smiling! and Poem About Threshing (Poem pa kulsen)

Keep Smiling!
A documentary by Askolds Saulītis, Latvia 2004, 58 min. In Latvian with English subtitles.
Digging up war relics - including the bodies of fallen soldiers - is a gruesome exercise that provides necessary closure for many families - and for the history books.

Poem About Threshing (Poēm pa kulšen)
An experimental film by Jănis Cimermanis, Latvia 2004, 13 min. In Latvian with English subtitles.
Based on a poem by Francis Dziesma, this jovial mini-musical plays on Latvian dialect as it explores one of the most important activities of Latvian country life, corn threshing.

Admission (per screening): $7 students & seniors; $8 general public
Information: 416-973-3012
