To celebrate the 97th anniversary of Estonian Independence, the Estonian Central Council in Canada (EKN) together with Estonian Honorary Consulate in Toronto hosted a reception at Toronto Estonian House on Friday evening.
Invited guests included diplomats based in Toronto and Ottawa. Government of Canada was represented by the Hon. Peter Van Loan, MP for the York—Simcoe, Leader of the Government in the House of Commons.
To celebrate the anniversary, EKN awarded several Orders of Merit to notable members of the Estonian community in Canada. This year’s recipients included Juta Corcoran, Nelly Hubel, Norman Reintamm, Kalle Kadakas, Margus Aruja, Rita Kütti, Livia Kängsepp and Irene Olljumc.

This event used to be the acme on the Estonian calendar. Attendance was almost a solemn religious obligation. We used to fill Massey Hall for it. What has happened? Where have the Estonians gone? Should we try to reverse the trend? Is there any point to planning for a new Eesti Maja? Or, a new Ehatare?
