What are the real chances of Russia responding to such a call? What is the success rate so far by the EWC? We know that Russia is a very difficult case to deal with, but to all intents and purposes we should make these claims in such a light that the rest of the international community will follow suit. I just hope that is going to be the case, because the EWC is a respectable body who has fought for years for Estonian freedom.

Where do you read in the resolution that Russia has to react to the resolution? The resolution is addressed to Estonians who held high office or positions of significant reposibility during the Soviet occupation, who were collaborators, who represented by their collaboration the occupation regime, namely the totalitarian power of the USSR.

Russia doesn't have to react to anything, as has been the case so far in 15 years of Independence. But this is not the way to get around to problems. Most solutions come from realizing that the answers lie within our own grasp to find them, not pushing the solutions across to table to our opponent's court.

Maxim says that the claims must be made "in such a light that the rest of the international community will follow suit". Not a bad idea. But Maxim, give us the benefit of your know how. What would make the international community sit up and take note? Also, what are the "claims" the EWC makes?

The European Union-the most highly respected political body in Europe is the one cow-towing to Russia these days. It's becoming pretty blatant. I applaude the European Council's efforts to call Communism a crime against history, but this is only the first step in a very long procedure to change attitudes in Russia. The EWC has made a good start in getting Estonia to clean its own backyard, but ultimately we have to come to agree with Russia herself about so many issues concerning our common past, and this is the biggest hurdle. It's good to pass resolutions, but that is still a long way from where the real problems lie. If the EWC and local Estonian ministries can work towards finding quick and responsible solutions to these problems, then Estonia will have a much better chance of living peacefully with her neighbours in the years to come.
