An even better point to raise is why Western journalists persist in using the letter "y" when writing Soviet names. It just happens that during Soviet times the govt of the day banned the use of this letter because of its western connotations, but still the west continues to do the Russkies a huge favour by retrospectively acknowledging the use of this letter when registering names elsewhere, thereby helping to eradicate another serious flaw that the Russians don't have to confess to. It goes to show how shallow is the political understanding of the Western world.

Transliteration, i.e. expressing Russian words written in cyrillic script into English or Estonian using the Latin script, goes according to conventions that have nothing to do with politics. There are alternatives and they change over time (that's how Peking became Beijing, for example).

Again, Maxim, you've proved yourself to be loud-mouthed ignoramus with a shallow understanding of everything.

You failed to comprehende anything I said in my comment. Go back and do YOUR homwork before you come here criticizing me.

Shut your mouth stupid russian. If i was you i would something else of your miserable life. We definitively accept too many stupid immigrants. We should be more selective.
Maxim's confused...01 Dec 2007 14:12
Why do Western journalists persist in using the letter "y" when writing (in English) Russian names like Trotsky? Because that's the convention, Maxim. According to Maxim, the Soviets banned the use of this letter but we do the Russians a huge favour by using it. I wonder how?

It's true that we can't understand you Maxim. The questuion is -- Can you understand yourself?

Goble's article here is about something else and something important -- a substantial point of fact for the historical record.
But, as usual, Maxim draws attention to himself by running off on an irrational, incomprehensible tangent, insisting all along that he's the only one in the world that knows anything. Reminds me of a guy named Erik who used to do the same thing in Toronto until he was laughed out of town.
a question01 Dec 2007 15:27
Is Maxim and Adele Nou the same person?
.02 Dec 2007 10:14
There is enough room in this newspaper for both Maxim and Goble.
Maxim has no right to complain that Goble wrote about something that is less important than whatever it is that Maxim has on his mind. Maxim tries to "push Goble off the page" by diverting and monopolizing the readers' comments section.
Maxim. If you have something to say, then write it up and submit it to the editor just like Goble and others do. If it makes sense, it will be published.

One of Ahto Männik's comments in times past was:

Teema: More Maxim please (2)

Maxim is the most informed writer on Estonian affairs, though occasionally someone from Toronto gets it right. Personally, I wish to see more of Maxim's writing in EE. I don't see anyone expressing these sorts of intelligent and perceptive ideas who form part of the local intelligentsia.

If what you say is true....then, by all means, submit your brilliant ideas to the editor.

Poor Maxim. He probably believes what he says.
