In fact I think that the Patriarch's comments and trip to Ukraine show that his real interests are not those of Russia, those of Ukraine or those of Belarus or any of such place. His real interests are those of the Church that he leads. He is basically announcing that he will do whatever will benefit the Church that he leads independently of any Eastern Slavic state. It's basically a declaration of independence and it creates a very dangerous dynamic that I don't think Russia, Ukraine or Belarus as states know how to deal with. It's the beginning of a new situation and I wouldn't be surprised that what Kirill is interested in ultimately is the creation of a supranational state akin to a Iranian style theocracy where the rulers are the clerics. This is new indeed.

The autocracy of which Alexander speaks of is not really in substance akin to what is happening in the Muslim world. Sure, the power struggle may seem similar, but in the end the self-destructive force with which the Muslim world punishes anyone that is not 150% on its side is the most worrying component in the equation. To leave the orthodox faith will never cost you your life. Try applying the same formula to the other crowd!
