for this very important arrow shot at the miserable sate of affairs when it comes to promoting - and translating - the best Estonian writing. Standards first, initiatives will follow!
I was completely unaware of Piiri Riik being translated or published (even though I am a regular visitor to Toronto's pre-eminent Estonian bookstore - Estore). I will try and find a copy - if anyone can help with publication details that wd be gr8!

The point is that decent English language translations of Estonian literature are very rare - if each example that I could think of had its very own digit I'd still have a free hand, not to mention both feet, with which to fend off ponderously stilted and turgid offenders that are simply painful to read and embarrassing to explain to readers of English.

You've responded thoughtfully to Luis de Miranda's infomercial for a translation Tammsaare into English.
I couldn't have done the same because this unprincipled opportunist would drive me into an uncontrolled rage.
De Miranda contacted the pre-eminent translator of Estonian literature into English, Eric Dickens, to discuss translating Vol.II of Tõde ja Õigus. Dickens asked some basic questions: Who is Luis de Miranda? Where is Haute Culture Books? De Miranda resented this and "postponed" their scheduled meeting.
Where is Eesti Elu's common sense and skepticism? The infomercial appeared there for more than a month.
