Funny, having arrived from the US in the early sixties, I was struck by how many leaders of major Canadian Estonian organizations held down day jobs as professors, senior engineers, physicians, corporate executives, lawyers etc. They hardly needed additional stimulation to avoid mental breakdowns. Referring to Karl Aun's book some 20 years after its publishing means losing the context of the narrative and motivation of the author.

Yes, there were some who took mindless menial type jobs, mostly because they lacked the language skills needed to find better paying employment but most of the older Estonians I knew at that time were well paid and lived comfortably, some were very well off.
According to the Canadian census, Estonains are one of the richest ethnic groups in Canada, much better off than English Canadians. Something for those who favour assimilation with the Anglos to think about...
