As I left last night’s meeting close to the midnight hour, I passed by an elderly couple leaving the meeting. They were tired, it had been a long evening. The street lights were on but Roehampton was pitch dark. The wife was putting forth a huge effort walking behind her walker. It broke my heart. It wasn’t easy for them, or any of the older folks to come to yesterday’s meeting, and stay so late into the night. But they did. What about the gentleman that drove in from way up north - a five hour drive. But he did. They did because they cared, and they wanted their vote counted. To all of you who came out to vote to save the church from demolition, I thank you most sincerely. I take my commitment to care for our congregation very seriously and promise to be a responsible steward of your trust.
Eyes on you!
St. Peter’s is (at least for now) a church not a community center. Assuming reference is to extraordinary AGM as per constitution and bylaws. Or is that also being tossed out along with common sense and reason, which clearly has left the building?
This last vote was a redo of a previous vote, which the 'sell' council did not win. However a redo was required due to the 'faulty' proxy process. That same 'faulty' proxy process was also used in the columbarium vote, so then that vote would also have required a redo.
No-one objected! Therefore it stands.

I wish the new council all the best and success in revitalizing the church. Curious though - how can you pull the application to close the columbarium when the congregation voted with a majority to close it?Fundraising for the $3M+ is what is needed in short order.
The purpose of the Advisory Committee is to make sure the Executive follows the wishes of the Congregation. Over ⅔ of the Congregation voted to close the Columbarium. If the Executive summarily moves to cancel the application, it will be violating the the wishes of the Congregation and will be in breach of the Constitution.
They had better tread carefully here...

Indeed, ⅔ majority voted to close the columbarium. ⅔ majority vote is needed to rescind that motion as well as any and all motions made on May 31. Motions of rescission do not require advance notice.
Back in the day, when I was planning my first AGM of our rural Alberta congregation, I was told of a story of how arguments at AGM's in the region used to be settled. At one church AGM, the opposing parties met out back in -35°C weather and solved their issues in a few minutes, Rules of Order be damned.
Perhaps devotion to Christ through prayer would be more fruitful than Rules of Order.

The devil can cite Scripture for his purpose meaning bad people can appear to be good to achieve their objective and even good things can be twisted to achieve bad ends.
Spoken by Antonio in "The Merchant of Venice", written by William Shakespeare (1564-1616):
Mark you this, Bassanio,
The devil can cite Scripture for his purpose.
An evil soul producing holy witness
Is like a villain with a smiling cheek, A goodly apple rotten at the heart.

Clearly, if you are one of those who want to save the church building, finances and the wishes of the overwhelming majority of the Congregation be damned, you are a good person. If, however, you see the elephant in the room and therefore are concerned about the future of the Congregation and want to do something about it, you are a Communist devil worshiping Free Mason and a bad person who wants to destroy buildings for cash.

It's not reasonable to expect Väino to answer every question posed in this "kommentaarium" by anonymous people on the internet so have some patience people. As the article says - "More information will be coming soon."

Regrettably, I believe that very few are devoted to Christ. “Thy will be done “ has morphed into “my will be done”. This will not end well, but it will surely end as we deserve.

“my will be done “ is the motto of those who want to sell and thereby demolish the church. To what end? To save the “congregation”, many of whom who don’t attend and hope the get some of the proceeds of the sale in their organisations, as shown by Reet Marten Sehr?
Again, define congregation. People who gather to worship God or themselves?

Recent U of T Reunion events included “Christianity in the Crucible of Radical Evil and Suffering: Learning from the Jewish, African American and Indigenous witness”… a lecture that "[attempted] to articulate and address the challenge that the experience and testimony of Jewish, African American and Indigenous genocide survivors embody for individuals, societies and nations reclaiming the Christian faith, values and way of life.” A leading example of practical theology.

The “new beginning” of St. Peter’s is really and truly “the beginning of the end”. When the new executive includes those who heckle the pastor during prayers and only joined the congregation at the last minute to snag a ballot, it doesn’t look as though the congregation will be represented by those who respect the Church. Whether a miracle manages to fall into their laps or not, I can't fathom returning to St’ Peter’s. It is a church, first and foremost, and no longer feels like a Christian home, only an empty shell. I love this church, its people and its building, but I cannot watch it be whittled away cent by cent until there’s nothing left.
Nägemist, kallis Peetri.

Not many antagonists in the church are aware that some of their behaviour could land them a criminal record. For example, "...those who heckle the pastor during prayers..." should face the Criminal Code of Canada §176(2), "Every one who wilfully disturbs or interrupts an assemblage of persons met for religious worship or for a moral, social or benevolent purpose is guilty of an offence punishable on summary conviction." Calling in the police could bring more civilized behaviour to the congregation...after a jail sentence of up to two years!
Congregational leaders should be acquainted with §176 of the CCC.

Please be a true minister and help to unite our church! Jail? Really? Teach us to bear one another’s burdens and be ready to forgive- and remember, God works in unexpected ways. God does not want His house destroyed - this place shall be a place of worship for many nations!
La dame blanche....could this by chance be the obtuse and incoherent Rita Kommendant?
I'm happy to see that so many readers know what a "true minister" is. FYI, I'm not a minister -- not even Lutheran. This is not about me so just give thanks to God for his great mercies!
Now, you are Lutherans. And to affirm this you got confirmed. In preparation for your confirmation, you studied Luther's "Small Catechism" by Martin Luther. In there, you read about the three uses of the law. Here they are:
“What purposes does the Law then serve?”
First, the Law helps to control violent outbursts of sin and keeps order in the world (a curb).
Second, the Law accuses us and shows us our sin (a mirror).
Third, the Law teaches us Christians what we should and should not do to live a God-pleasing life (a guide). The power to live according to the Law comes from the Gospel.”
In our country, we have laws that serve these three purposes. For example, we have rights and freedoms. These are the cornerstones of our society. These include the freedom to gather in peaceful assembly. We also have a government that makes laws to protect those rights and freedoms from violators. In Luther's words, the government is the "left hand of God". And there are times when God will show his left hand. (Think of police, courts, crown prosecutors, and jail!)
It is unfortunate that, as written in some posts above, some Christians believe they should ignore some laws, maintain that laws don't apply to churches, and that ministers should never reference labour laws lest they be accused of thinking only about money.
No, don't be naive. The law is a gift of God through his lawful government. And one should not be indifferent to that which makes for peace and good governance.

The law is very clear!
The person who so rudely disrupted opening prayer at the recent Special Meeting of the Congregation needs to realize that this will likely come back to haunt! Not only that, but the conduct of the frenz throughout the meeting was completely un-Estonian!
The vast majority are furious...

For 15 years, the St. Peter's members' Facebook page has been providing extensive information, commentary, photos, and videos of life in our church. You are all invited to join our St. Peter's Congregants and Friends group if you have not already had the opportunity. Formerly this page was "St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Toronto", however the New Juhatus has demanded the name be changed or else...
Hope to see you all there!
God bless.

I wouldn't trust Einola even telling me broadcast.
Sounds like you have hijacked Peetri Kirik FB page from the new juhatus, refusing to turn over the admin function. What a dick move!
Old juhatus decided to resign, let the new juhatus do it's thing without silly games like this.

You’re wrong. This is Olev’s FB page which the new juhatus demanded he give up. They are free to start their own FB page. It is Tiiu Roiser who tried to take over Olev’s.

So let me get this straight. There was a FB page for 15 years, titled "St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Toronto", which for all intents and purposes functioned as official FB page for Peetri Kirik. However, after the board resigned, the page turned out to be a personal FB page of Olev instead?
I'm still calling it a dick move.
I wonder what else will we find out?
