Well done. I appreciate the focus on actions, not empty rhetoric. Sometimes actions speak louder than words.
patriot27 Nov 2024 07:51
If it is true that (to quote from Trei's article) "the ‘Eesti Evangeelne Luterlik Kirik [EELK]’, was introduced by the Stalinist era Communist Party in Estonia, in April 1949, a month after the March 1949 mass deportations", why is your church still associated with this group? Why are you associating with anyone sent to you from these communists? Are all you council members okay with a possible Putin operative in your midst? Are you council members just being useful idiots? Come clean and pull out now. It is true, let's see some real bold action. Why are you Trei still on council? Put your money where your mouth is.

Õ27 Nov 2024 08:18
Trei is NOT saying that the current EELK is communist or that the current EELK might be sending Putin's puppets to us.

He is saying that in 1949 EELK was fully controlled by communists and to imply that St. Peter's in Toronto had something to do with the communist era EELK is wrong.
Kõditaja27 Nov 2024 09:06
Amusing. Not one of the present SP council members was even a church goer until recently. Each of them however have been drummed out of multiple Estonian orgs. They then failed in their campaign to destroy the community mandated keskus project. And here they are trying to pass themselves off as saviours of SP. Are they here bc they care or bc they had no place left to go?
What?27 Nov 2024 09:23
"They then failed in their campaign to destroy the community mandated keskus project."
The keskus project is an independent project. It is not tied to St. Peter's, although some godless 'conflict of interest' people are attempting to divert assets.
Church Goer28 Nov 2024 16:08
This is blatantly false. Do you even know these people? Most are all long-time members and have been very active in the community and the church. "Each has been drummed out of multiple Estonian orgs." Another falsehood. Pray tell, if this was true, name each one and from which organization they were drummed out. This sounds like a certain member just causing more strife again.

Has the present council actually been voted into office or are they still serving in “coup d’etat” status? I only ask since the author talks about choosing which votes to acknowledge and which ones to annul. Curious if a vote has ever been held regarding their involvement in all this? If not, would their actions and authority not be null and void?
current situation28 Nov 2024 14:15
At the last annual meeting in September, no names were presented from the floor to challenge the names presented by the council.
On ‘current situation’ comm28 Nov 2024 15:28
So what you’re saying is that since no new names were presented, the present unelected council remains unelected. Thank you for clarifying.
Church Goer28 Nov 2024 16:03
Three of the acclaimed Congregational Council were up for re-election. The Council put forth 3 names and congregation members were free to put forth for election anyone else. When no-one else was put forth, the three suggested new members were elected.
To Goer28 Nov 2024 16:36
I get it now: the unelected council put forth 3 names who were elected by the congregation. However, as the 3 names were put forth by the unelected council their candidacy should be null and void. At least by the article’s authors logic. Thus one can deduce that the ENTIRE council remains in fact…unelected.
Õ28 Nov 2024 18:08
Please stop spewing out total nonsense about coup d'état, unelected council, etc. You don't know what you are talking about, total fake news. And stop hiding, Kõditaja, Lafayette, 'On ‘current situation’ comm' and 'to Goer' is clearly the same person.

A very well written article. Great to see that such progress has been made in a short time. The KESKUS cult, which has caused so much division in our community, must be furious about our church being saved.
Viva01 Dec 2024 17:41
Not furious in the slightest. Despite all the divisions you and your people have created, we , the vast majority the community actually, will all welcome you back to the fold, united in purpose, ready to celebrate, at KESKUS. We already forgive you. We know you, we love you. When you are ready to ask for forgiveness, we will be ready to give it.
Real deal30 Nov 2024 07:45
The real thanks in all this belongs to the previous council. The slander of this article ignores the fact that they built the solid foundation upon which the present council can hang their laurels and bask in glory.
Õ30 Nov 2024 08:24
The old council laid no foundation. Ok, I take it back, they did lay foundation to sell, as they had no other ideas or vision. They made it very clear in their articles.
Ö30 Nov 2024 09:00
For all their faults, at least the previous council was duly elected. They remained true to democratic principle. Not like the present group who simply appointed themselves in charge out of sheer vanity.
Õ30 Nov 2024 10:09
This is simply not true. Current council is every bit as legitimate as any previous council has been. Sour grapes, this is all I can say.

It is not the community members with common sense that are causing division. Saving the church was a major victory against KESKUS but there is still a lot of work to do. We must now pick up the pieces of our fractured community. The money that has been spent will never be recovered but it is a good sign that we have adapted by using the Latvian Center and other places for our events. The church will become even more important in the future because of the accessible location and ample room for community events and gatherings. I am still optimistic about our future as we move on from the KESKUS fiasco an rebuild our community.

Sheesh..get over yourself already
Reality check05 Dec 2024 07:08
There is no ample room at the church and even less parking. This is all deflection.

No one is writing about the results of the vote? The council’s new bylaws were rejected by the congregation, not because of Keskus, the previous council, or any other unrelated matters, but because the new council seems to be dead set on consolidating power, taking away decision making authority from the congregation, and picking and choosing members based on their own subjective opinion with their two-tiered voting system. They were already starting from behind the eight ball because they had exiled three active congregation members for voicing their opinions against the new council (one of them in quite tragic fashion).

The new council also is playing fast and loose with the charitable objects, seemingly not consulting proper legal counsel to advise them on a serious issue which could easily lead to charitable status being revoked (had it been passed).

It is also amusing, to say the least, that the new council chairman prominently chided the congregation on not donating enough money, referring to the dire state of the finances. I say amusing, because this is exactly what the prior council had been saying for years (more tactfully) and which they were raked over the coals for by the activists who took over the church.

The whole proposal to sell the church was predicated on saving the congregation and sacrificing the building. It would have given the congregation the funds to have a proper minister for decades, with plenty left over for activities and periodic rental of other churches.

"The whole proposal to sell the church was predicated on saving the congregation and sacrificing the building."
More lies from that 2020 council. Last week's meeting showed the truth = the 2020 'sell the church council lead', and the 'keskus lead' are in cahoots to try to stymie the current council's good work at St. Peter's. Both see keskus as the destination for funds from a St. Peter's sale.
If the keskus lead ever shows the keskus revenue generation forecast for the next few years, some people might be convinced of its viability. However, no such outlook has ever been presented, and one doubts such a pro forma exists.
Best advice = sell the Madison Avenue lot, thus minimizing financial losses in the Toronto Estonian community.

Previous council was duly elected and acted in the best interests of its members. Present council is UNELECTED and as pointed out by ‘Reality check’ is only about exercising power over others. Nuff’ said.
Northern Esto05 Dec 2024 19:28
Selling the hole in the ground on Madison is a great idea. The Eesti Maja has been lost forever but this money could still be used by our community. Some could be donated to St. Peter's to update and church hall. Some could also be used in cooperation with the Latvian community to upgrade the Latvian Center for use by both of our communities. We can not live in the past and pretend that our community is as big as it was 50 years ago but we are still far from being dead. Those of us with shares in the Estonian House should put pressure on the leaders of KESKUS to hold a free and transparent election on the future of this project and hopefully put whatever money is left back into the Estonian community.

Selling SP is a great idea. The Eesti Maja has been lost forever but this money could still be used by our community. Some could be donated to KESKUS to aid in building our new community home. Some could also be used in cooperation with the Latvian community while construction is completed. We cannot not live in the past and pretend that our community is as big as it was 50 years ago but we are still far from being dead. We should all put pressure on the leaders of SP to hold a free and transparent election and move away from politburo-style governance. From there let the congregation decide on the future of the building and hopefully whatever money is made can be directed to the future of the Estonian community.

When will the minutes from the most recent AGM be available to the public?

Will this also include the proposed by-laws and voting results?

To Northern Esto & Southern Esto: The current Board and all those who support them have done a huge disservice to our community. It is inevitable that the property will have to be sold and the market value has been decimated because of the heritage listing and because development properties are not worth nearly as much as when the previous board negotiated a fantastic deal. In addition, negotiating a new deal will take so much time that the church could become insolvent before any agreement is signed. And let’s not forget that the columbarium conundrum will have to be solved. And they accused the previous board of mismanagement - unbelievable!

Given the advanced age of the present council members, can the membership request a Cognitive Abilities Test? Their decisions and general demeanour are becoming quite erratic and worrisome as time goes on…

To Challenger:

You, and YOUR ilk are the ones who have “done a huge disservice” to our community and through the stealthy machinations you have all lost your ever lovin’ minds in pursuit of gawd knows what- exactly. Madison Project is nothing but a Pank. Go ahead and BlahBlahBlah about market value, fantastic deals, insolvency, conundrums of boxes of ashes because what is left after the dust settles are just coins and the “inevitable” black mark of greed and dissent on a people who should have the pride, fortitude and blood memory to have survived a turbulent history. Instead, we are witness to members of our tribe who have been meelitattud by false gods. The program NEEDS of the community, the activities and desires of both young and old have not been met in any capacity of the so-called Centre of our Culture. You are still fooling yourselves. Encroyable!
Northern Esto06 Dec 2024 20:30
To Challenger, why is it inevitable that the church must be sold? With the high cost of rent and many congregations unable to afford to build a church in Toronto, our church is now a valuable cash cow for the congregation that will generate income for as long as the congregation exists. Heritage designation is also a plus because there many opportunities for grants from Heritage Canada. It is time for the KESKUS supporters to just stop whining, abandon their useless project, and rejoin our community.

To the parrot and others who still support KESKUS, I propose a new name for this project. Since all these people do is beg for money from our community, why not call this proposed center KERJUS instead?

KERJUS does not beg for money, they take it where they can. The end justify the means. It started with the take over of EAC to get charitable status and the machine keeps rolling.
