A recent Postimehe poll described it all. The most favourable response to the current dilemma was that the Russians need to decide for themselves that they want to assimilate into the Estonian community. Knowing full well how difficult iti is anywhere in the world to assimilate Russians merely makes this response look like a fait accompli for total failure! Russians have a very strong collective mentality. To expect them to suddenly think like the great Estonian individualist is really asking too much of them. All efforts which are based on the proposition that Russians are given the opportunity to assimilate, and then the rug is literally pulled out from underneath their collective identity is a sure recipe for disaster. It is no wonder that Ansip is seen by the local Russian community as the great Satan of the north. However, a more pertinent question I would like to as is this. Why on earth is the Estonian government supporting the local Russian community which has its headquarters at Mere puiestee) to the tune of millions of Kroons per year, when that building is nothing more or less than a powerkeg of Soviet Nostalgia waiting for the final onslaught to happen and the Estonian-Russian divide to finally plunge into the ugliest warfare imaginable since World War Two????
