Anne Applebaum is a keen observer of the Russian scene. It seems that she's picking up where Solzhenitsyn left off. I wouldn't have thought it possible, but let's have more of it.
The only down-side is that Maxim will be along soon to bark at us about his knowledge about Russia. An idea in his head is like a fly in a bottle, constantly buzzing, with no way to get out.

Applebaum has an Eastern European background and a Polish husband to boot, but her public face is typically American in her well-meaning effort to draw Russia into line. The only people who are really telling the truth about Russia are those journalists who were formerly close aids working for Putin but are now ecking out a poor woman's existence because they are today's prototypes for Orthodoxy of what Salman Rushdie once was for Islam. However, their message is terrifyingly honest, and should be heeded closely. Appelbaum did a wonderful job putting together a text on the crimes of Communism, but Eastern Europe has since come full circle with Putin aiming at legitimizing his autocratic power in a global village.
"[D]raw Russia into line... prototypes for Orthodoxy... come full circle...in a global village."
Sounds pretty good, Maxim, but it doesn't say anything, just like "those journalists" who you can't name.

I think that you have Maxim's style in focus.
