AFRICA/DR CONGO - Bishops' appeal to young Africans: "Stay in Africa to build a better continent"

Kinshasa (Agenzia Fides) - "Do not allow false trappings of wealth lure you to move out of your Countries in search of non-existent jobs in Europe and America". This is the appeal launched by Mgr. Nicolas Djomo of Tshumbe and President of the Episcopal Conference of the Democratic Republic of Congo, to the African youth so that they do not seek solutions to their problems outside their Country but instead struggle to build a better society.
Mgr. Djomo launched his appeal at the opening ceremony of a meetng of Pan-African Catholic Youth and Children that is being held in Kinshasa, DRC from August 21-25, 2015.
"Be vigilant of the deceptions of the new forms of the destruction of the culture of life, moral, and spiritual values", said Mgr. Djomo. "Use your talents and other resources to renew and transform our continent and for the promotion of lasting justice, peace, and reconciliation in Africa". "You are a treasure for Africa. The Church relies on you, your continent needs you", remarked the Bishop.
According to a statement sent to Agenzia Fides, the meeting, organized by the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM/SCEAM), was attended by 120 delegates from Gabon, Zimbabwe, Ghana, South Africa, Botswana, Swaziland, Egypt, Congo, Kenya, Uganda, Cameroon.
In a message presented on behalf of the Secretary General of SECAM, Rev. Fr. Joseph Komakoma, the Director of Communcations of SECAM outlined the objectives of the meeting: to involve the youth in the celebration of the African Year of Reconciliation (from July 29, 2015 to July 29, 2016); to institute a Pan-African Organisation for bringing together at a continental level Catholic Action Movements for the Youth and Children and to consider the possiblity of hosting a World Youth Day in Africa.
Recalling that about 70% of the youth form about 70 per cent of the population of Africa, Fr. Komakoma concluded that "the youth are the most important sector of the African population on whom the Church ought to count on, as a pririoty, in the scope of Church's evangelisation's efforts such as the promotion of justice, peace, reconciliation, and socio-economic development of our continent".
