Ehatare and the Estonian Relief Committee (ERC) in Canada welcomed the women of AKEN (Akadeemilised Kanada Eesti Naised) on May 3rd to celebrate the opening of Ehatare’s new AKEN salon with champagne and herring sandwiches. Renovating Ehatare’s hair salon was made possible thanks to a generous donation from AKEN, and thanks to its generous benefactor and late Ehatare resident, Ragne Toming. Donations like this help us bring the Home up to the standard our residents deserve!

With the enthusiastic help of the AKEN women, the new plaque was revealed, and the ribbon was cut marking the official opening of the AKEN Hair Salon. With the blessing of pastor Kalle Kadakas, attendees were invited to enter the newly renovated salon. The opening ceremony was followed by a dinner for all guests and a performance from “0 (Null) Teater’s” J. Liiv and H. Visnapuu from Eesti. Ehatare long-time resident and weekly hair salon user Lea Ehasoo said “the salon is very, very important to me because I cannot manage my hairstyle on my own.” Having a regular hair care routine is vital to a senior’s dignity, self-esteem, and overall mood. By providing this in-house service, we can satisfy essential caregiving needs, boost self-confidence, and help combat depression and isolation by providing an opportunity for socializing and human touch.

How did this all begin? In 2020, ERC board member and AKEN member Kristiina Valter came to the ERC board and Ehatare indicating that AKEN had some funds to donate towards a good cause, and they felt it would be well spent on Ehatare residents. Some ideas they had included upgrading some of the outdoor space, buying new furniture, renovating the sauna area, etc. Since most residents at Ehatare are female and AKEN is a women’s organization, the thought was to do something for the women, but to not exclude the men. The hair salon was identified as being something out of date and in need of attention. With that, a proposal was sent to AKEN. “This was a project that everyone was on board for. Doing something for our seniors, we loved the idea! It really resonated with us and touched our hearts” shares Ellen Leivat Director of AKEN at the opening ceremony. What better way to treat Ehatare residents then to renovate a space where they can all enjoy being pampered. People feel better when they look their best.

With the support of AKEN’s generous donation, Ehatare was ready to accept bids in July 2021. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there were unforeseen delays. In the meantime, Ehatare hired a new hairstylist, who assisted Ehatare’s design team with choosing finishes and suggested adding a manicure station. Maaja Matsoo provided valuable input and ideas on behalf of the AKEN women. With these new ideas and COVID restrictions slowly lifting, renovations began in February 2023 and the salon was completed in just over a month.

AKEN and its benefactor Ragne Toming created an innovative opportunity to help fund a large portion of the hair salon renovations. We continue to strive to bring Ehatare up to new standards. With the support of the Estonian community, Ehatare can continue to serve the Estonian community with quality services and a safe and welcoming environment.
