“Estonia is a nation on the sea and of the sea and it is fitting that Estonians are now looking to their beaches and waterfront for future economic growth as well as national environmental treasures,” stated Ambassador Michael C. Polt this weekend at the kickoff our Embassy’s participation in “Let’s Do It!” clean up campaign at Pikakari beach.
On this same theme, ten Estonian local government officials have just returned from a two-week, Embassy-sponsored visit to the U.S. to learn how some of America’s most successful waterfront development projects are maximizing economic and ecological gain as they rehabilitate polluted harbors and beaches. The team visited Washington, DC, Baltimore, Maryland, and Portland, Maine.
Estonia’s waterfront, neglected for decades under Soviet rule, is fast becoming the locus for new development as Estonians reclaim their maritime heritage.
