The contest - which is what it is, no comparison to the Nobel Prizes - is being organized by EuropeanVoice.com, the website of the European Voice weekly that is published by The Economist Group since 1995.

About Ansip's candidacy, the website wrote: "Despite the economic difficulties, Ansip's government brought Estonia to the point that it could join the eurozone and will do so on 1 January. At a time when the credibility of the eurozone had been called into question, Estonia's application to join was important."

Siim Kallas, transport commissioner, was described as follows: "The Spanish government, which chaired the Council of Ministers at the time, was slow to respond when air traffic in northern Europe was grounded by a cloud of volcanic ash from Iceland. Kallas stepped in to co-ordinate the response of national transport ministries and air traffic controllers."
