Hamilton, ON. July 30, 2018 – The internationally renowned artist, Peeter Laurits (http://www.peeterlaurits.com/e...) will be hosted by the Hamilton Arts Council (http://hamiltonartscouncil.ca/...) as part of their European artist exchange program at the Cotton Factory (www.CottonFactory.ca). Peeter Laurits is one of the most active and productive contemporary artists on the Estonian art scene and has exhibited in New York, Chicago, London, Berlin, Moscow, Antwerp and Budapest.
Peter Laurits is an extremely gifted multi-media artist. His main means of expression are photography and digital manipulations. Early in his career, Peeter began to critically examine mass media and commercialism following Estonia’s emergence from the Soviet dictatorship. Soon afterwards, he began to explore the ecology of human life as just one of many equal components in the global ecosystem. Peeter moved his practice to the forest where he combines the values of a natural and sustainable existence with state-of-the-art technology. This is reflected in both his lifestyle and his work. Peeter’s current focus examines a world where humans are not at the centre of existence but instead are part of larger community of conscious creatures. His work has been exhibited in many public and private collections and several of his large-scale pieces have been installed in public spaces.
With the re-establishment of Independence in 1991, the Baltics escaped the old Soviet restrictions. With this new freedom of expression, came a political and social upheaval that has allowed the arts to flourish. Estonia’s thriving arts scene has resulted in a blossoming of museums, galleries and arts hubs to showcase the resulting cultural outpouring. Peeter Laurits will give a series of artist talks across Ontario about his career as well as the vibrant Estonian arts scene.
The Hamilton Arts Council European Exchange Program at The Cotton Factory provides a valuable opportunity for artists from a wide range of disciplines and career levels to build their practice. This annual juried artist exchange takes place in Hamilton, Ontario and Tallinn, Estonia.
The Hamilton Arts Council
The Hamilton Arts Council exists to strengthen the role of the arts and culture in the City of Hamilton by making the arts accessible and relevant to the entire community. Founded in 1969 and incorporated in 1973, the Hamilton Arts Council is the second largest and one of the oldest community arts councils in Ontario. Originally known as the Hamilton & Region Arts Council and later Arts Hamilton, we have a long history of supporting local arts and culture through publication, advocacy and community partnerships.
The Cotton Factory
In the heart of lower Hamilton, this former cotton mill complex from 1900 is a prime example of adaptive reuse. The Cotton Factory has been transformed into a creative industries complex with space for workshops, studios for artists, small manufacturing and office space for creative professionals.
