OTTAWA - Status of Women Canada is pleased to launch the Call for Nominations for the 31st annual Governor General's Awards in Commemoration of the Persons Case.
The Governor General of Canada instituted the Awards in 1979 to honour the 50th anniversary of the "Persons Case" and the five Alberta women whose determination led to a landmark victory in the struggle of Canadian women for equality. The Famous Five achieved not only the right for women to serve in the Senate, but they and their many contributions paved the way for women to participate in other aspects of public life.
Recipients of these Awards continue the tradition of courage, integrity and hard work that the Famous Five of the Persons Case inspired. Their effectiveness and courage has advanced the cause of equality for girls and women in significant and substantial ways that have enriched their communities.
Each October, on or close to Persons Day, October 18, five awards, in addition to one Youth Award, are presented to candidates chosen from across Canada. To be eligible for nomination, candidates must be Canadian citizens and over 30 years of age or between 15 and 30 years of age for the Youth Award.
While nominations for the Persons Awards are accepted all year round, the deadline for 2010 nominations is June 30, 2010.
