This year’s Estonian Independence Day (February 24) celebrations coincided with the 2002 winter Olympic Games. It has been a tradition for the Estonian Central Council in Canada at Independence Day to recognize and thank individuals for service to the community and for outstanding achievement with the Canadian Estonian medal of Merit. While the focus was on the Olympic podium for many, a presentation of the Canadian Estonian Medals of Merit ceremony on February 22nd took place in Toronto’s Estonian consulate before the official diplomatic reception held jointly by the consulate and the Estonian Central Council. We congratulate those honoured. This years medal recipients, not all of whom were able to attend the ceremony, as the medals are awarded across Canada were as follows: Leo Koobas, Toivo Kõhelik, Juta Kõvamees Kitching, Tõnis Laar, Toomas Merilo, Maimu Mölder, Tauno Mölder, Margot Nortmaa, Leida Pajur, Ruho Paluoja, Heino Paluveer, Eduard Rebane and Elle Rosenberg. Those present, as well as former recipients of the Medal of Merit at the evening’s reception, were applauded for their dedication to the cause.
