Cathedral Bluffs Symphony Orchestra presents Stravinky's The Rite of Spring and World Premiere of Waltz by Estonian-Canadian Composer Erik Kreem

TORONTO, ON - The Cathedral Bluffs Symphony Orchestra (CBSO), under the direction of Norman Reintamm, continues its' 2018-19 season on Saturday, March 9, 2019 at 8:00 p.m. Featuring Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, a magnificent musical masterpiece of the twentieth century, and Debussy's Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun. Additionally, CBSO is pleased to present the world premiere of Waltz, by Estonian-Canadian composer, Erik Kreem (commissioned by Cathedral Bluffs Symphony Orchestra), who will also be making his orchestral conducting debut.
Erik Kreem is excited to return to collaborate with the Cathedral Bluffs Symphony Orchestra. Having premiered movements of his Symphony no. 1 with the CBSO in their regular concert season and as part of St. Joseph’s ArtsFest, he has also had works performed by the Continuum Contemporary Music ensemble, the Northern Secondary School String Orchestra, and numerous small ensembles. As a pianist and cellist, Erik has performed his and other composers’ works at the Estonian Honorary Consulate’s New Years Levees, Estonian Music Week, Haiti fundraisers at St. Clement’s Anglican Church, anniversary celebrations with the University of Toronto and the University Women’s Club, and chamber concerts at his secondary school. The winner of 2018’s Toronto Teen Composer Award, Erik mentored with composer Christopher Thornborrow to compose and conduct a new chamber work for Continuum Contemporary Music. “Waltz”, a new composition commissioned by the Cathedral Bluffs Symphony Orchestra, will be Erik’s orchestral conducting debut. He would like to thank Dorith Cooper, David Stone, Ene Lomp, Renata Todros, Paul Newman, and Norman Reintamm for their professional and musical guidance and support.
Maestro Norman Reintamm started his musical career as a pianist at the age of four. He was later accepted to the Royal College of Music in London, England, and worked as Senior Staff Conductor at the Estonian National Opera for many years, at the same time heading the Opera Department at the Estonian Music Academy, and conducting in the Opera Department of the famed Sibelius Academy of Finland. He has guest conducted many orchestras in Europe and Canada, conducted ballet at the famed Sadler's Wells Theatre in London, England, and is the pianist for Trio Estonia based in Tallinn, Estonia.
The concert will be held at P.C. Ho Theatre in the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto at 5183 Sheppard Avenue East. Pre-concert talk starts at 7:15pm. The Cathedral Bluffs Symphony Orchestra, founded by Clifford Poole and Neil Blair, has been delighting audiences with its impeccable musical quality, musical diversity and engaging programs since 1985. Under the baton of Maestro Norman Reintamm, the orchestra will present nine concerts this season, including a subscription series of five concerts at the state-of-the-art P.C. Ho Theatre in the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto.
