A 60th birthday party for a small Toronto designed and built basic military trainer, the DeHavilland Chipmunk DHC-1, will be held by the Toronto Aerospace Museum, on the weekend of May 26 - 28 at Downsview Park (which used to be Downsview Canadian Forces Base), 65 Carl Hall Drive at the same hangar that the plane was built. 21 of the birthday planes are expected to be shown among other antique aircraft and automobiles.
The activities will begin at 5pm - 10:30pm, Friday, May 26, when there will be a Symposium, involving the people who designed the Chipmunk, trained in it, trained people to fly with it, fly it now and have interesting stories to tell.
Saturday and Sunday May 27 and 28 will be the Wings and Wheels Festival in the hangar and airfield starting at 10am. Antiques of land and air will arrive to toast the birthday plane.
The hangar has fascinating aircraft, such as a huge Avro Lancaster, four engine WW II bomber, a twin engine anti-submarine patrol aircraft (built at DeHavilland under license) a scaled down model of the Avro Arrow and others.
