On the proposal of Chief of Defence Brigadier General Riho Terras, Minister of Defence Urmas Reinsalu appointed Colonel Artur Tiganik to be the new Commander of the Army, as of 20 July.
The current Commander of Army, Colonel Indrek Sirel, will continue his service in the Headquarters of Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum.
Artur Tiganik (age 41) has graduated from Ryazan Higher Airborne Command School, Joint Command and General Staff Course at the Baltic Defence College and defended his Master’s degree at the U.S. Army War College.
Colonel Tiganik has served in the Kalevi Infantry Battalion - in ranks ranging from platoon commander to battalion commander, as staff officer in the Defence Forces General Staff of, as Commander of the Scouts Battalion, as staff officer at ISAF Headquarters and Deputy Commandant of the Estonian National Defence College. From 2006 to 2009, Colonel Tiganik served as Commander of the First Infantry Brigade and since 2009 is serving as the Chief of Staff of the Army.
Artur Tiganik is married and has a daughter.
According to the Defence Forces Service Act, service commanders are appointed by the Minister of Defence on the proposal of the Chief of the Defence Forces.
