The Baltic communities in Canada will commemorate the 82nd anniversary of the Soviet deportations in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania on June 14, 1941 and will honour the tens of thousands of victims - mostly women and children - with a candle lighting commemoration at Toronto’s Nathan Phillips Square at 7pm, June 14th, 2023.
Immediately following the candle lighting event, a new exhibition examining Estonia’s struggle for independence and the contribution of Canadians of Estonian heritage to that cause will be launched in Toronto’s City Hall rotunda. The exhibition is produced by the Estonian Institute of Historical Memory with contributions by Laas Leivat, and will be on display in the Rotunda from June 14-21.
Both the event and exhibition are intended to remind Canadians of the mass crimes committed by Soviet Russia and the struggle of nations like Estonia to escape its colonial repression.
