For a country of less than 1.5 million people, Estonia's contribution to the world of music over the last 100 years is remarkable. Contemporary composers like Arvo Pärt and Erkki-Sven Tüür are known around the world, as are composers from earlier in the last century, Eduard Tubin and Lepo Sumera.
Among performing musicians, one need only mention conductor Neeme Järvi, his baton-wielding sons Paavo and Kristjan and Eri Klas, the Estonian maestro who has made a terrific impression in recent seasons on the podium of the National Arts Centre Orchestra.
Friday evening the Embassy of Estonia presented two young stars of the Estonian National Opera in concert at First Baptist Church. The event was given in celebration of the 90th Anniversary of Estonian Independence.
