TORONTO, Aug. 29 /CNW/ - Dozens of communities across the province are opening the doors to architecturally significant buildings and other heritage treasures free of charge during Doors Open Ontario 2003.
The Ontario Heritage Foundation and the communities participating in the fall lineup invite residents and visitors to experience the province's newest
heritage touring adventure. Explore some of Ontario's most intriguing buildings and discover our rich heritage firsthand.
"Doors Open Ontario is a much-anticipated event as many of the sites are normally closed to the public," said Allan Gotlieb, Foundation Chairman. "It provides a unique opportunity to explore and enjoy the sometimes hidden and
always interesting places and spaces in Ontario cities, towns and villages."
The Doors Open concept migrated from Europe to make its North American debut as a millennium project in Toronto. Its success encouraged the Foundation to design a provide-wide program in 2002. This year, 130 communities are participating in 27 events.
The 2003 event lineup kicked off in Guelph in April. Since then, over 300,000 people have peeked inside buildings and sites at events in Gravenhurst-
Muskoka, Kingston, Ottawa, Toronto, Brockton, Brockville-Thousands Islands, Huronia, Smiths Falls, Owen Sound, Red Lake and Markham.
There is still more to see with over a dozen community events running through October, including Doors Open Binational Niagara. Call 1-800-ONTARIO for a free copy of the Doors Open Ontario guide. For details visit www.doorsopenontario.on.ca.
Doors Open Ontario 2003 sponsors include: Masonite International Corporation, INCO Limited, the Ontario Ministry of Culture, and the Ontario Tourism Marketing Partnership Corporation.
The Ontario Heritage Foundation is an agency of the Government of Ontario, dedicated to preserving, protecting and promoting Ontario's heritage for all of us to enjoy now and for others to experience in the future.
