EstDocs, an Estonian Documentary Film Festival, started its 2018 season with a gala presentation at Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema in Toronto, Canada.
The EstDocs Gala featured Jaanis Valk's film „Ahto. Chasing a Dream“ that followed the adventurous career of the Estonian sailor Ahto Valter and his dream of sailing around the world.
After the film, the audience had a chance to discuss the film with director Jaanis Valk and producer Erik Norkroos, the discussion was moderated by an Estonian film editor and producer Marje Tõemäe.
In addition to the main festival, EstDocs also organizes Short Film Competition for films up to 7 min in length. This year's 1st Prize in Professional category was awarded to Vishal Vittal for his film “Above".
Honourable Mention was awarded to "Awakening - as told by Roman Toi", a film by Kalli Paakspuu.
The jury members for the Short Film Competition professional category were Katriina Isberg (actress), Ariadna Ochrymovych (filmmaker, Canada) and Riho Västrik (associate professor at Baltic Film School, Estonia).
The Tartu College Estonian Studies Center Amateur Filmmaker 1st Prize Award was awarded to Maarja Lõhmus and Marina Koreshkova's “Narva 2018: The National Debt”.
Tartu College also awarded several hounourable mentions as follows:
Aadu: The First, and Not the Last (for an interesting story)
Kohala TV (for an interesting story)
The Last Merchant Series. A New Name (for professional camera work and film montage)
Estonia, Kalev: Taste Test (up and coming filmmaker)
The Audience Award for short films was awarded to Kalli Paakspuu film "Awakening - as told by Roman Toi".
Short film Competition monetary awards were provided by Tartu College.

The festival continues with its program until October 23rd. Some noteworthy films being shown include Raimo Jõerand and Kiur Aarma's "Rodeo: Taming a Wild Country", Joosep Matjus' "The Wind Sculpted Land" and Helga Merits' "Geislingen: Coming Home Soon".
