The European Union Film Festival (EUFF) returns this fall with in-person screenings after only online streaming during the pandemic. Online is now also available.
Estonia presents “On the Water” – “Vee Peal” – produced in 2021. A film from veteran director Peeter Simm, the film depicts a teenage boy’s adventures and misfortunes during the early 1980s in Soviet-occupied Estonia.
Peeter Simm became famous for his debut film, “Ideal Landscape”, which was banned during the occupation and was later recognized by many as one the best Estonian films of all time.
“On the Water” was selected as the Estonian entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 94th Academy awards. The screenplay was written by Olavi Ruitlane and is based on his own bestselling novel. Rasmus Ermel’s performance as the 12-year-old Andres has received high praise, as have some well known actors – Marko Matvere, Maria Klenskaja, Andres Lepik, Evein Võigemast, Kalju Orro and others.
