A celebration honouring Estonian culture is coming to a historic site near Stettler on Saturday.

The Jaanipäev Midsummer festivities will be held at Linda Hall, a major pioneer settlement for some of Alberta's first Estonians.

This is the first event hosted by the newly formed Alberta Estonian Heritage Society. It was created last November at a merger of the Calgary and Edmonton societies.

Events start at 1 p.m. with a flag-raising ceremony.

The flag has had quite a past: it flew on the Tall Herman tower beside the Estonian Parliament building during the 120th anniversary celebrations of the blue-black-white flag.

It's quite an honour to have this flag in Alberta," said Liaa Herman, a board member of the Alberta Estonian Heritage Society.

Pioneer games and musical entertainment is at 2 p.m. A campfire and singsong starts at 7 p.m. Celebrations are expected to last into the evening, said Herman.

Guesst are invited to bring their own picnic basket, but hot dogs and a cash bar will be available.

To find Linda Hall, head 12.5 km south of Stettler on Hwy 56, then head three km east along Linda Hall Road.

For more information, call Herman at 227-3926.
