In North American professional sports hockey has been the most powerful magnet for Estonian-American athletes. The NFL has, to our knowledge, not seen any gridiron athlete of Estonian heritage make it to the professional ranks other than QB Steve Pelluer (Põlluäär), who was a back-up for a number of teams in the 1990’s.
The Seattle Post-Intelligencer suggested on April 19 that we may soon be able to add Michael Roos to that list. A feature article by Clare Farnsworth, “World of opportunity greets Eastern’s Roos” introduces an athlete from Estonia, for whom during the first 10 years of his life football meant soccer and being hungry was a part of daily existence. At the time Michael was the middle of three children of a single mother working two jobs in Tallinn.
