ERR NewsAuthorities say they have identified the individuals who organized a cyber attack against Estonian government websites on Wednesday evening, claiming to represent the hackers group "Anonymous".
The suspects include local youths. Officials said whether or not criminal proceedings will be launched depends on additional facts obtained in the investigation, such as the extent of the damage they caused, according to a statement from the Estonian Security Police.
The attacks were launched against the websites of the government, police and political parties on the evening of October 10.
The Information System Authority had confirmed on Thursday that the attacks were connected to a YouTube video (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?f... ) allegedly posted by the computer hackers' group Anonymous, which has been the subject of much attention in the Estonian media in recent days. In the video, the state is chastised for using taxpayer money to bail out Greece and for neglecting its own people.
Anto Veldre, a security specialist for the Information System Authority, described Wednesday evening's cyber attacks as a string of “lone, amateur attempts” that were each eliminated within a matter of minutes.
