OTTAWA—A “significant” cyber attack on federal computers was searching for financial records, but the incident has not compromised the details or timing of next month’s budget, the government says.
Treasury Board President Stockwell Day, the guardian of the country’s purse, said Thursday that while the attempt to hack into computers in his own department and the finance ministry was not “the most aggressive” it was significant. The attack forced those ministries to shut down access to the internet for some time.
“They were going after financial records,” he said. “We were able to shut things down and protect information.”
