On Saturday, April 16, 2005, one corner of Toronto will be painted blue and white for a day as the city’s 10,000 strong Finnish community celebrates its second-annual FinnPower marketplace and fashion show.
This year’s theme is FinnPower and Culture. Along with commercial vendors, the community will be showcasing: its cultural organizations, vibrant Finnish fashion, fitness demonstrations, and a lecture series with several dynamic speakers on the ledger.
Founded in 2004 by community partners, the inclusive FinnPower showcase was an instant success. This year’s organizing committee; Sisko Peltonen-Siren, Sirkka Suvilaakso, Hans Myrskog and Markus Raty, look to take the event to the next level.
“Because of its inclusiveness and range of choices, FinnPower attracted large numbers of second and third-generation Finnish-Canadians, many of them at their first community appearance,” said Markus Raty.
“With the introduction of a fashion show and other cool, current trends, we are looking to build on last year’s unqualified success.”
FinnPower and Culture 2005 will have a little of something for everyone with many new events added this year. At noon, catch the sensational fashion show featuring international labels Marimekko and Nanso as well as traditional Finnish national costumes.
Check out the Nordic walking lecture and demonstrations and don’t miss the demonstration of Floorball wizardry by Toronto’s very own Finnish-Canadian Floorball guru, Juha Mikkola.
At 14:30 a fabulous concert featuring former Toronto Symphony Orchestra violinist Andrea Hansen and acclaimed opera singer Marian Sjolander, along with performances from the Saalem Singers, Jukka Joensuu and Sonja Tuomainen, will take centre-stage in the Concert Hall.
Also on the card will be a dynamic lecture series featuring keynote speaker, Dr. Mika Roinila from New York, as well as lectures from our very own Dr’s. Varpu Lindstrom and Veli Ylanko.
Of course no Finnish function would be complete without the requisite delicious fare including fresh Karelian pies, pastries and other delectable treats.
Make sure you stick around until 15:30 for the drawing of many fabulous door prizes including a return airfare to Finland, donated by Finnair. Other prizes include: Nordic walking poles, great gift baskets and a “sauna-education” evening at the legendary Moscow Sauna Club.
FinnPower and Culture 2005 will be held from 10am to 5pm on Saturday, April 16th, 2005 at the Agricola Finnish Church at 25 Old York Mills Road (at Yonge). Admission is free.
