According to newly-released figures from the 2011 census, 2.3 percent the nation's residential properties are owned by foreign nationals.

The highest relative figure of foreign-owned living quarters was found in the northeastern coastal town of Narva-Jõesuu, where 240 homes - 12.8 percent of the total - belong to foreign citizens, reported Eesti Päevaleht.

Ruhnu island, located between Estonia and Latvia on the Gulf of Riga, comes second with the corresponding figure at 9.3 percent.

Anu Tõnurist, an analyst for Statistics Estonia, said that many Russians have purchased summer homes in Narva-Jõesuu, which is close to the Estonian-Russian border, while many Swedish citizens, whose ancestors lived on Ruhnu, still own dwellings there.

Of the 655,900 homes in Estonia, Estonian citizens own 93 percent, the state owns 1.7 percent and local municipalities a further 3.0 percent.
