100 Good deeds for the Estonian Community at the Toronto Estonian House
Estonia is the land of our parents and ancestors, it is forever close to our hearts, even though we may not have been born there. The Toronto Estonian House has been the iconic center of Estonian activities in Toronto and a symbol throughout the free world for over 50 years. It was purchased, renovated and maintained by volunteers. The Estonian House was the place for helping Estonian culture survive during the time of soviet occupation. On April 20, 1963 the first Honorary Consul of Estonia in Canada, Johannes Markus, who was also the president of the A/S Estonian House in Toronto Ltd (1952-1954), stated that the Estonian House is the symbol of our culture’s independent existence, perseverance and heart.

The Friends of Estonian House are continuing the tradition of volunteerism to maintain and beautify the house for our community. We have painted, renovated, restored, gardened, held events and stood up in protection of the house when needed. We are grateful to our parents and grandparents’ generation for giving us this house, and we are making our gift of 100 good initiatives at Toronto Estonian House to the Estonia 100 celebrations over the course of the centenary timeframe of 2017 to 2019.

Eesti on meie vanemate sünnimaa ja on meie südametes kuigi oleme sündinud välismaal. Toronto Eesti Maja oli ostetud ja meie ühiskonnale ümber ehitatud vabatahtlikute poolt rohkem kui 50 aastat tagasi. Eesti Maja oli see keskus mis aitas alal hoida eestlust sel ajal kui Eesti oli Nõukogude surve all. ,,Eesti Maja on meile meie rahvusliku iseolemise, meie rahvusliku tahte ja rahvustunde sümboliks”, ütles Johannes Markus, EV Konsul Kanadas ja A/S Eesti Maja Esimees (1952-1954), 20. aprillil, 1963.

Eesti Maja Sõbrad korraldavad talgupäevi, et Toronto Eesti Maja eest hoolitseda ja seda kaunistada. Oleme värvinud, puhastanud, uusi põrandaid pannud, kööki ümber ehitanud, aiatööd teinud, pidusid korraldanud, sõprade kohvikut pidanud ja palju muud. Oleme väga tänulikud oma vanematele ja nende põlvkonnale, et nemad meile selle maja kinkisid. Meie omakorda kingime oma 100 head tegu Toronto Eesti Majas EV 100 sünnipäevaks. Nagu Toronto Eesti Maja seinale on kraveeritud Henrik Visnapuu sõnades ,,Me kestame üle aja!”.
