Foreign Ministry Secretary General Marten Kokk participated in a high-level Community of Democracies conference in Lisbon July 11-12, where the effect of the financial and economic crisis on the development of democracy was discussed.
Kokk emphasised that implementing democratic governing standards is a requirement for reducing poverty and maintaining sustainable development. “Since the financial and economic crisis clearly affects developing nations even more than developed ones, in order to insure the continuing development of democracy we must guarantee that funding for development co-operation does not suffer significantly in the face of the crisis,” noted Kokk.
