BRADFORD-WEST GWILLIMBURY, ON, Oct. 12 /CNW/ - The Ontario government is upgrading the guide rail along the shoulders on Highway 400 to improve road safety and driving conditions in central Ontario, Transportation Minister
Harinder Takhar announced today.
"Our government is committed to making Ontario's highways, roads and bridges safer and more reliable," said Takhar. "These improvements to the guide rail along Highway 400 will provide increased road safety for the over 80,000 drivers who travel this section of the highway daily."
Work involves replacing cable guide rail on the outside shoulders of Highway 400, between Highway 9 and Simcoe County Road 88, with steel-beamed guide rail. Steel-beamed guide rail provides a safer shoulder area on major highways by lessening the distance a vehicle would deflect towards traffic if it were to strike the guide rail.
The $577,950 contract was awarded to Francis Powell & Co. Ltd. of Gormley. Construction is underway, with completion expected in late November 2004.
To minimize disruption to drivers, there will be no ramp closures during the course of the work. Single lane closures will take place between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. in the southbound lanes and between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. in the northbound lanes.
