Kanadaga pole uuel projektil ilmselt midagi tegemist, väljaarvatud ehk see, et tuleb siin niikuinii midagi ette võtta. Mida tähendab ometi see “
niikuinii”, mida kasutatakse nii “eesti side” kui “mitteeestlasi” äriga teenindamise kohta? Igatahes või muuseas, “paik...mis motiveerib eestlast mööda kõndides kuulutama uhkusega, et vaat, see on
eesti keskus”: kas antakse tõesti võimu ohjad nendele kes nõnda poolehoidu otsivad? Autor ju kuulutas „olen enne toimetamist jaganud artikli teksti nelja organisatsiooni juhtidega ning EM juhatuse liikmetega, et nemad kiidaksid heaks minu isiklike arvamuste jagamise.” Kas minnakse Eesti Maja peakoosolekule ja hääletakse
niikuinii? Ja mis saab eestlaste nimest?
Kanada riik on rajatud ametlikult (1867, 1982, 1988) Kakskeelsusele, Mitmekultuurse (1971, 1988) raamistikus. Madison Gruppi pealetungiv rõhk üksmeelsusele ja ainuõige konsolideerimise tõele tundub siin väga võõrana. Kas noored kes seda mantrat on omaks võtnud teavad sama vähe Eestist? Kust on tulnud äkki see mõte, et eestlaste kultuurielu Torontos on ühekülgne ja vajab „Ühte” keskust? Mida tähendab „Tartu College-i juurde konsolideerimine”? Tehti resolutsioon 2012a. “to extract maximum value from Estonian House”. Millal on olnud ühiskondlikutest väärtustest juttu?

Kes Toronto ajalugu tunneb, ja ka selle peegeldust Toronto arhitektuuris hindab, teab Toronto häid linna plaane ja planeerijaid. Toronto on moodsa ülemineku ajastut läbi teinud, ja praegu on ees massiivne intensifikatsioon. Tänapäeva elu valitseb samal ajal põhiline ebastabiilsus. Sellest on eesti teadlasedki kirjutanud koostöös teiste tipp ühiskonnateadlastega. Las noored Toronto eestlased otsivad endale kesklinnas “põnevust”, “kaasaegsust”, ja ka “trophy” ehitust (L. vahekorda modernse ja traditisiooniliste keskuste vahel, mitte ühte otsa hävitada. Selles
vahekorras kujuneb “unikaalse identiteedi väljendamise võimalus.”
At a time of significant interest in cultural heritage and preservation, and a lively use of the Estonian House by our community and others, it is baffling that selling Estonian House and its valuable land is contemplated, let alone energetically thrust upon the community out of the blue. Renewal is a normal part of city life, and there are three options for buildings: replacement, upgrade, and displacement.
The first option, replacement of the Estonian House within a condo building, and the current proposal for displacement, selling the Estonian House and relocating to an as-yet-unbuilt structure, have worked on the same premise: that these are ways to “extract maximum value” from the current Estonian House, and that the details are worked out after an approval in principle from the shareholders of the non-profit corporation. The devil was in the details.
As predicted by an architect with experience, large sums of money were expended and debt incurred, with no results, as three successive renewal projects working on the same premise proved impractical. No one has owned this. We want to have compassion for the older and younger generations that have tried to do well by each other. At the same time, with respect, and for the sake of our Estonian cultural heritage, more than trust is required in now making a consequential financial and social decision about Estonian House.
Estonian House itself will be gone, and its valuable land, if there is an approval of the new project. Furthermore the financial risk to the Estonian community will be far greater in what has recently been presented by the three other boards along with that of Estonian House. Who will benefit from the loss and the risk? Who will suffer the loss and the risk? It is fair to say that the devil in the details is the same old devil this time in a new world. The stakes are exceptionally high.
The third option for renewal, the current proposal for displacement, is the most drastic. Not only does it involve the sale of Estonian House and the relocation of community activities and possessions to a much smaller facility of very different design in a very different neighbourhood, with very few advance details to suggest this move has been thought through, but it also foresees the dissolution of the non-profit shareholders’ corporation and its decision-making power over the purposes and functions of “Estonian House2” in its “new life”.
The inheritance of investment and commitment to Estonian House should not be squandered by accepting the new project, with details to come only in future. Indeed, renewal options should be reviewed and compared. We have learned things along the way, and what is at stake now goes to the heart of the community. For there to be a
relationship between the modern and the traditional, openness and solidity, the extraordinary and the ordinary, within which the ambiguity, unease, and excitement of new influences and deep attachments can get worked through by young, old, and middle-aged alike, we are blessed in Toronto to have two centres that have evolved very differently, responding to different needs and predilections, over the years. It is ethically and practically incumbent on Estonian House shareholders and the Estonian community to demand and carefully compare the details before approving any new plan for Estonian House.
The middle option for renewal, an upgrade, is perhaps the most obvious choice for a decision that is consistent with the community’s values, since it works with what is already there. Yet an upgrade has not yet been seriously considered. Veneration for tradition and preservation of heritage are now clearly at odds with economic opportunism. Estonian House users and supporters successfully applied, raising matching funds, for a large grant for a major repair from the city’s Culture Build Investment Program. This made public sense, for the city and for the Estonian community, for the option of an upgrade, though not for the options of replacement and displacement. Also for an upgrade, Estonian House is now a candidate for significant funding for quality restorative work from the Toronto Heritage Grant Program. Instead, the building has been looked at solely from the perspective of an opportunity for redevelopment, for which smaller, older, less well managed and less well marketed buildings are often targeted. Why should renewal projects serve only that sector of the Estonian community most prepared to embrace “maximizing value” in economic terms as their dominant value?
On the one hand it is wonderful that youth between the ages of 18 and 35 can find new inspiration downtown at Tartu College, and it is understandable that some express a preference for the “trophy” building they envision in the new project over what they want to leave behind at Estonian House (Estonian House board members Veiko Parming, “

These young people have recognized they can have what everyone has, that they have choices, and perhaps they recognize themselves having this now for the first time, free from the constraint of having to accept only what is in their place. But part and parcel of worldly abundance is the choice brought to Estonians, grounded in practices of cultivation and acknowledging the fundamental ambiguity of progress, of whether to welcome the influence of the world or not, to accept or reject.

If you look carefully you see that the glass around the new Madison parkade is all bulletproof. A brand spanking new 50 meter outdoor rifle and pistol range in the heart of downtown Toronto!

Between gun nuts and axe throwers, this is surely a parody.
Maybe some levity is required amidst this "civil war" within our community. I wish folks slowed down and read the special resolution with care, and perhaps even reread it a few times.

This is long so I may have to split it up. Sorry.
I start this with just one question in mind. What is our main problem?
Money.
We don’t have enough. We don’t generate enough. Money solves everything.
I also agree with Veiko Parming. Broadening our building to non-Estonians or simply 3rd generation Estonians who don’t see many reasons to participate now would help immensely financially.
With those two sole drivers in mind, here is something to consider whether we stay at Eesti Maja or move.
The gun range, if we wanted to, could probably easily pay for virtually ALL the current expenses of the entire building if we modernized it and made it open to the regular public on particular days. Yes, there would be some challenges in doing that. But…
It is not unreasonable to see rental rates per person of upwards of $100 per HOUR. We go to a modern range in Florida that is packed with regular people and tons of tourists. They have merely 8 lanes with an average of 2-3 shooters per lane. They conservatively run 80% filled 9 hours a day. The math? $100 X 8 X 2 X 9 = $14,400. At 80% fill rate…heck, make it 25%, that’s $3,600 per DAY. In Toronto, a 50% rate would probably be totally plausible.
It would be fairly easy to generate $10,000 to $15,000 a week conservatively. Is there ANYTHING that can generate money like that on the horizon now at either building? Sometimes opportunity comes in forms you may not like but it is what gets you out of your predicament.
Logic would say, “Oh those crazy Americans are gun nuts.”. Yes, but the locals have their own member range next door.
I’m ONLY talking tourists. Usually British, Canadians, Germans etc. Typically Europeans mostly. And they come laughing, excited, and full of anticipation. Money is not even on their radar. They barely ask the prices.They just want to do it. Just normal everyday people who are curious.
Point being there are millions of people in the GTA that have curiosity and would love to go to a range and see what that’s like. It is so obvious from watching tourists there.
$10,000 a week? $500,000 per year? Does the credit union even generate that?
Plus it would be an advertising platform to outsiders for other Eesti venues like wedding reception rentals & catering. and so forth.
Crazy? Did you know that AXE throwing has become huge in Toronto. One company has 4 or 5 ranges and growing wildly. They can’t keep up. Throwing AXES? Seems almost absurd doesn’t it? Except that it’s not.
Maybe there are too many physical barriers like law, insurance, sound proofing etc. Maybe not. And of course, it will have expenses. Those are gross numbers. It just seems like something to explore because it may be the solution.
At the moment it appears we’re out of decent options.
