TORONTO, Aug. 19 /CNW/ - Highway 401 eastbound express lanes between Kipling Avenue and Jane Street will be closed this weekend to replace 1.25kilometres of concrete base in the pavement.
Lane closures will be in effect:
- 9:30 p.m. Friday August 20 to Monday August 23 at 5:30 a.m.
"The 401 is a strategic trade corridor used by over 400,000 drivers every day," said Takhar. "Keeping it in a good state of repair - while minimizing impact to drivers - is vital. If this work was done in a more conventional way
using partial closures at night, it would take about 70 nights. Rehabilitating the pavement over two summer weekends will shorten construction time by about
five weeks and save about $1.5 million."
While this work is under way, the two express lanes between Kipling Avenue and Jane Street will be closed to traffic. One express lane will re-open for eastbound traffic on Sunday morning at 10 a.m., with the second
lane re-opening at 5:30 a.m. on Monday (see attached maps).
During this construction period, the four eastbound collector lanes in this area will remain open. Drivers travelling eastbound through the Kipling-Jane area are encouraged to plan ahead, check traffic information and use alternate routes.
To reduce queuing and travel time during the weekend closures, the following ramps will be closed on Saturday August 21 and Sunday August 22 from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.:
- Dixon Road / Highway 401 eastbound on-ramps;
- Islington Avenue / Highway 401 eastbound on- and off-ramps; and
- Weston Road / Highway 401 eastbound on-ramp.
The ramp lane from Highway 401 eastbound express to Highway 400 northbound will be closed at night.
To minimize any impacts this closure may have on road users, the ministry will provide real-time traffic information through media bulletins, the MTO website, and the MTO Info Line. In addition, an extensive network of signs will be placed in strategic locations throughout the GTA and outlying areas to advise about the closures.
For up-to-date information on highway construction and road conditions in the area, call the ministry's road information line at (416) 235-4686, or toll-free at 1-800-268-4686.
