Montreal Estos and friends celebrated the Mid-Summer (Jaanipäev) at Lättemäe on Saturday, June 23rd. The majority of the 60+ revellers were from Montreal but several came from as far away as Estonia, Gatineau, Montebello and St. Bruno. And there were plenty of ‘mudilased’ running around the grounds.

The main organizer this year was Grete Mugu along with several incredibly able assistants … with emphasis on activities and music for young people and children … not to mention the abundance of homemade traditional Estonian food, including breads and desserts as well as beer and apple cider. The pleasures of a well set table in the outdoors allows for the gourmet in all of us to experience food at its best. It is unfortunate that Anthony Bourdain never made it to Lättemäe.

Beer tasting, always a popular event, was once again organized by Mark Altosaar, with 3 varieties of pallet cleansing popcorn supplied by Sonia Dorda. The variety of offerings from Quebec micro brewers keeps getting more and more abundant every year. Some local brewers are even using Estonian beer recipes under license. Lättemäe Lager anyone?

What has become an annual Boot Throwing contest or ‘saapaviske’ (surely the Olympics will be debating this new Estonian contribution to international sports), was won by Kaija Sander and Mark Altosaar. Apparently there is talk of a ‘Boot Camp’ for training future athletes.

Despite late evening rain, everyone greeted the longest day of the year with enthusiasm and delight.
