“JK Jazz 2010” not to be missed!
23 Jul 2010 A.E.G
Annual two-day event builds on past success!

The fourth edition of the annual “JK Jazz” music and art festival is just over a month away. This year’s festival is set for Saturday August 28 (with gates opening at 12 noon and the entertainment starting at 1 PM), followed by Sunday August 29 (gates open at 10 AM; show begins at 11 AM). Festival organizers have worked hard to make this year’s festival even better than the ones before!

Sincere thanks to festival partners, the Estonian Foundation of Canada and the Timmas Memorial Fund. Thanks also to sponsors, The Estonian Relief Committee and the Estonian (Toronto) Credit Union. Special gratitude is extended to the Town of Georgina and to radio station Jazz FM 91.1.

Inaugural Beach Volleyball Tournament!

On the morning of Saturday August 28, just before “JK Jazz 2010” gets underway, volleyball players and spectators will gather for the first-ever “Jõekääru Invitational Beach Volleyball Tournament”. Camp Jõekääru was recently blessed with the addition of 4 beach volleyball courts, thanks to generous donations from many local individuals and organizations. These courts have become a focal point for Camp JK’s curriculum and for the Volleyball Camp thereafter. Now, at “JK Jazz” it’s time to turn it up a notch.

Four-person teams will compete for the distinction of being crowned the first-ever “JK Beach Volleyball Champions” on the stage of the festival. Tournamnet organizers are local Estonian volleyball veteran and coach, Taimo Ilves, and beach volleyball master and coach, Kristiina Nieländer.

Look for advertisements, e-mails and Facebook postings next week, with all the registration and game time details. Info will also be available at the festival’s website www.jkjazz.ca.

Second show stage - - up-close and un-plugged!

Past “JK Jazz” festivals have never been short of musical talent or performances. In fact, the biggest challenge for festival Artistic Director, Allan Liik, has been how to keep the programme on schedule, given the long ovations and the demand for encores.

Addition of the Timmas Art Studio, with its tremendous art show and sale, to the festival two years ago has now provided a solution to the scheduling challenge. This year a second, smaller performance stage, will be added at the Timmas Studio. This stage, in contrast to the Main Stage, will offer music fans a chance to hear various combinations of duos and trios, in an intimate coffee house venue.

To add to the ambience, current plans call for special coffees to be served to patrons at this new performance venue. The annual art exhibit and sale is planned again, with a portion of all art sales benefitting Camp JK renovation and refurbishment. Artists interested in exhibiting and selling their works should contact Andres Musta. Contact information can be found in the JK Jazz ad on this page and also on our website.

Terrific lineup of performers!

This year’s “JK Jazz” lineup of acts is truly impressive. From the local Canadian jazz scene we are expecting Juno Award winning drummer Terry Clarke, pianist Adrean Farrugia and songstress Sophia Perlman, Cuban greats Luis Mario Ochoa, Hilario Duran, Paco Luviano and Joaquin Nuñez, along with stalwarts Eric Soostar and Armas Maiste. An appearance by well-known young trumpeter Mikael Tenno and his band is also in the works.

Additional surprises are always in the works, so stay tuned through our website and come to the festival prepared to be wowed!

Estonian jazz greats include well-known singers Laura Põldvere and Kadri Voorand. Each has an impressive repertoire of current and classic greats. They will be accompanied by an amazing all-star band consisting of: Raivo Tafenau on sax and accordion, Mihkel Mälgand on bass guitar and double bass, Virgo Sillamaa on guitar, Jürmo Eespere on piano and Eno Kollom on drums.

Two jazz students, Johanna Ratt and Kaia Oidekivi (from the Viljandi Kultuuriakadeemia, affiliated with the University of Tartu), who are currently Music Programme counsellors at Camp JK, will grace our festival with their terrific voices as well.
