Karin Shuey appointed new Washington DC director of Estonian American National Committee Estonian Life
January 1, 2016 --- The Estonian American National Council, Inc., (EANC) has named Karin Shuey as its Washington DC Director, a newly-established position. K. Shuey will be responsible for EANC’s Washington DC activities and programs, representing EANC with Congress and the Administration, and at DC-area meetings and functions. She will also work closely with organizations such as the Joint Baltic American National Committee (JBANC) and the Central and East European Coalition (CEEC). Ms. Shuey will report to the EANC Board of Directors.
Shuey is retired from a 22-year active duty career in the U.S. Navy, where she had significant experience with the U.S. European Command in Stuttgart, Germany, and with the Estonian Ministry of Defense as the U.S. Embassy’s Defense Attaché in Tallinn. Shuey holds a B.A. degree in Russian and East European Studies from the University of Washington, Seattle, and an M.A. in National Security Affairs from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA.
After her retirement from active duty, Ms. Shuey obtained her second Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology; most recently she has conducted therapy for active duty military and veterans dealing with service-related challenges.
With the addition of this position focusing on EANC’s political objectives, the organization will be able to intensify its work to counteract Russia’s aggressive actions, misinformation, and anti-Estonian propaganda. Funding for the position comes from individual donations, and EANC thanks its contributors for their generous support.
The Estonian American National Council, founded in 1952, is the central organization representing all Estonian Americans. Its focus is two-fold: preserving the Estonian language and heritage in the United States, and with other like-minded organizations, working to ensure that U.S. policy and actions take into consideration issues of importance to Estonian Americans.
