VICTORIA, BC. A rekindled interest in the life and culture of their ancestors has brought together a vivacious group of second and third generation Estonian-Canadians on Vancouver Island for an opportunity to learn conversational Estonian. An intensive two month course was offered recently by instructors Karin Ivand, Külli Kesküla Meyer and Helle Paulus Dunbar, all formerly of Toronto. The recent “graduates” of the language class will be practising their new skills at various upcoming social functions. This includes a Christmas tea and a traditional Estonian Christmas church service, followed by a “kiriku kohvi-laud”. During the past three years, much to the surprise of many, an active Estonian-Canadian community has evolved on this west coast island. Most of the participants have emigrated from other parts of Canada and the USA and enjoy the feeling of family and community that comes together with the celebration of a common heritage. The mailing list for this growing group has over 100 names to date. The introductory Estonian language course has proven to be so popular that a second one is being planned for the new year.
