International Concert Flutist Maarika Järvi will be performing with the Oshawa Durham Symphony on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2005 at 7:30 p.m. Calvary Baptist Church, 300 Rossland Road East, Oshawa.
The concert, “NORDIC EXPRESSONS" will see Järvi perform a ‘must’ for her instrument, Nielsen’s Flute Concerto. She is part of one of today’s most famous musical families: father Neeme and two brothers Paavo and Kristjan, are all high profile conductors! Be rocked by the roaring sounds of Sibelius’ fervent and nationalistic “Finlandia” and Shostakovich’s political snub to Stalin and the Communist Party with his almighty 5th Symphony. The music director of the Oshawa-Durham Symphony, Marco Parisotto, will conduct the program.
As a soloist Maarika Järvi has been invited to play with various orchestras such as the New Jersey Symphony, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, Spanish Radio-Television Symphony Orchestra; Gothenburg Symphony in Sweden; Moscow Chamber Orchestra, Estonian National Symphony Orchestra (ERSO), "Lyra Borealis" Chamber Orchestra in Toronto; the Presidential Symphony Orchestra in Ankara, Turkey; Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia, Orquesta Sinfónica del Principado de Asturias and Camerata "Arión" in Spain; the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra and the Pärnu City Orchestra in Estonia.
A champion of Estonian flute music, she has premiered numerous compositions of composers of her native country and has recorded six Estonian Concertos to date. "Chant of a Celestial Lake" by Peeter Vähi and "Leonides" by Urmas Sisask, two new concertos dedicated to her have been released under the title Celestials on the CCn'C label. Musica Triste, a collection of Estonian flute concertos by Tubin, Sink, Jürisalu and Tamberg has recently been issued by Warner/ Finlandia label. Most recent premieres have been the flute concertos of Eino Tamberg and René Eespere (Concerto "Flato") written for her in 2003.
Her work as a recitalist and chamber musician has taken her to many countries of North America and Europe. She has recorded with the Spanish Radio-Television Orchestra (RTVE Música label) as well as for the Spanish, Swedish and Estonian Radio stations. As for chamber music she has recorded for ASV and CCn'C in different chamber combinations such as a trio from the Absolute Ensemble in New York. The CD Méditations for Chandos Records features flute, viola and harp. She also has a duo "Martinika" with bassoonist Martin Kuuskmann, which explores new repertoire for this unusual combination.
Equally busy as an orchestral musician, she has held Principal Flute positions of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia in La Coruña, Orquesta Sinfónica del Principado de Asturias in Oviedo, in Spain. For 1994-98 seasons she was a Principal Flute in the Spanish Radio-Television Orchestra (Orquesta Sinfónica de la RTVE) in Madrid, Sergiu Comissiona, music director. She has collaborated, with such orchestras as the English Chamber Orchestra and Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona I Nacional de Catalunya, joining them on their American tours.
Ms. Järvi was born in Tallinn, Estonia, where she began her musical studies at the Tallinn School of Music until she moved to the United States with her family in 1980. She continued her studies at the New England Conservatory of Music, studying with Doriot A. Dwyer and Lois Schaefer of the Boston Symphony. She graduated with a Master of Music Degree from the Carnegie Mellon University where she was a student of Julius Baker as well as his Teaching Assistant. During the student years she has attended Master Classes with the distinguished professionals of their field such as Walfrid Kujala, Julius Baker, Donald Peck, Jeffrey Khaner, Jeanne Baxtresser, Michel Debost and William Bennett. She has also participated in numerous summer festivals. She has been a prizewinner in a number of competitions in Boston, Toronto, New York.
